La Yaung Taw Project

Daw Khin Kyi Foundation was founded in 2012, by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as chairperson. A mobile library project, the first long-term project of the Foundation among others was initiated in 2013 and the second one titled ‘the Hospitality and Catering Training Academy’ was established in 2014, in Kaw Hmu township. The Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, since 2014, has also been implementing other humanitarian assistance projects such as building roads, houses, school buildings, hostels for teachers, providing solar panel batteries, transformers, building deep water wells and concrete water tanks, providing assistance to natural disaster-affected victims, providing

emergency assistance to internally displaced people (IDPs) across the country.

In 2019, the DKKF has been planning to introduce another long-term project named as ‘La Yaung Taw Horticulture Training Academy’ under the guidance of Chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw where the Foundation has bought an area of 100 acres. 


Objectives of the project

o   To support the vocational education to dropout youths who have not finished their education.

o   To raise the income of the family with systematic knowledge and skills about horticulture

o   To understand, produce and use the organic fertilizer and pesticide

o   To understand the danger of chemicals left on vegetables and fruits which are consumed by people daily

o   To raise awareness of the people about the root cause of natural disasters which is the deforestation and to value and conserve the forests



Horticulture Training Academy

There will be gardens, forests, nurseries in the school developed for students to learn practical lessons related to horticulture. During the course, internationally well experienced teachers will teach cultivation of flowers, fruits and vegetables, gardening, prevention of deforestation and environmental conservation. 



Learning period

The period of the training is one-year but there will be short courses for those who are interested as well.

 



Who can apply?

                Those who have passed the Grade 9 will be allowed to attend the training for free of charge. The curriculum is designed for the students to have good job opportunities after graduating from the school. 




 Subjects of the course

                 During the training, top soil analysis, systematic growing of flower plants, gardening and landscaping, maintaining orchards, producing organic fertilizer, cultivating chemical-free vegetables, marketing, pest control, forest conservation will be taught with 60 percent hands-on practice and 40 percent theories. A short course for growing some particular flowers such as Thazin (Bulbophyllum auricomum), rose, orchid, or growing mushroom will also be opened for anyone interested.

 

Job opportunity

                For the moment, only 50 students will be allowed due to limited capacity but will be increased the number of students in due course. After graduating, the students will be able to work as gardeners in residences, office buildings, gardens and parks or they may establish their own horticulture related businesses.

                The place where we intend to use as training ground for horticulture has different kinds of soil and a natural forest. The trainees will be able to use it for hand-on practices. The place will also be managed for public observation and study.




Appeal to all

                We are now planning to build necessary facilities such as school buildings, dormitories for students, multipurpose hall, store and land preparation in the area reserved for the training school. Any well-wisher or nature-lover who want to support vocational trainings for young people are welcome and invited to donate in cash or in kind for school development.
